You study harder in the domains where you scored lowest on that specific test. You feel a surge of confidence when your next practice test hits 71%, because 71 is a lot more than 62. You might even decide you are ready for the exam based primarily on how far you have moved from that initial number.
The problem is that your first practice test score has become an anchor - an initial piece of information that disproportionately influences all subsequent judgments, even when it should not. This is the anchoring effect, one of the most pervasive cognitive biases in human decision-making, and it distorts how students study in ways they rarely recognize.
What the Anchoring Effect Is
The anchoring effect was first described by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman in 1974. In their foundational research, they demonstrated that when people make estimates or judgments, they are heavily influenced by an initial reference point - an "anchor" - even when that anchor is arbitrary or irrelevant.
In one classic experiment, participants watched a roulette wheel that was rigged to land on either 10 or 65. They were then asked to estimate the percentage of African countries in the United Nations. Participants who saw the wheel land on 65 gave estimates that were significantly higher than those who saw it land on 10 - despite the roulette number having absolutely nothing to do with African UN membership.
The anchoring effect is not a failure of intelligence. It affects experts and novices alike. It operates automatically, below conscious awareness, and it influences judgments even when people are warned about it.
How Anchoring Distorts Study Decisions
The anchoring effect shows up in student decision-making in several specific ways:
First practice test scores set the frame. Your initial practice test becomes the reference point against which all progress is measured. If you score 55% on your first attempt, a subsequent score of 70% feels like a massive improvement. If you had scored 75% on your first attempt, a subsequent 70% would feel like a failure - even though 70% is the same score in both cases. The anchor changes your emotional and strategic response to identical information.
Time estimates anchor to past experience. If you studied for your last exam for two weeks and passed, you might anchor your preparation timeline for the next exam to two weeks - regardless of how different the content, difficulty, or format might be. Past study durations become anchors for future planning.
Peer performance creates anchors. When a classmate tells you they scored 80% on a practice test, that number becomes an anchor for your own self-assessment. You may study more or less than you should based on how your performance compares to theirs, rather than how your performance compares to the actual passing standard.
Question difficulty anchors perceived preparedness. If you start a study session with easy questions and get them all right, you may anchor your self-assessment to that initial success and overestimate your readiness. If you start with the hardest questions and struggle, you may anchor to that difficulty and underestimate your preparation.
The Anchoring Trap in Self-Assessment
One of the most damaging applications of anchoring in studying is in judging your own readiness for an exam. Students who anchor to their first practice test score tend to define "ready" as a certain distance from that anchor rather than against an objective criterion.
Consider this scenario: A student takes a diagnostic practice test and scores 50%. They study for six weeks and take another practice test, scoring 72%. They feel great - a 22-point improvement. But the passing score for their exam is 75%. The anchoring effect makes them feel close to ready because they have come so far from 50%, when in fact they are still below the threshold they need to reach.
The reverse is also true. A student who scores 78% on their first practice test might feel that there is little room for improvement and reduce their study effort, anchoring their target to "a bit above where I started" rather than to the level of mastery that would make them confident on exam day.
How to Counteract Anchoring in Your Studying
You cannot eliminate the anchoring effect - it is too deeply embedded in human cognition. But you can develop habits that reduce its influence on your study decisions.
Establish external benchmarks. Before taking any practice test, identify the objective passing standard for your exam. Write it down. Post it where you study. Use this as your reference point instead of your first practice score. Every self-assessment should be measured against the exam's standard, not against your own starting point.
Use multiple data points. A single practice test score is a noisy measurement. It reflects not just your knowledge but also your test-taking stamina, the specific questions that appeared, your energy level that day, and random chance. Take multiple practice tests and track your performance over time. Trends are more informative than any single score, and multiple data points dilute the anchoring power of any one result.
Separate progress from readiness. Progress and readiness are different things. You can make tremendous progress (from 40% to 65%) and still not be ready (if passing is 70%). You can make minimal progress (from 72% to 74%) and be ready. Train yourself to evaluate these independently rather than letting your progress narrative substitute for an honest readiness assessment.
Challenge your time estimates. When planning your study schedule, resist the urge to base your timeline on how long you studied for a previous exam. Instead, analyze the content volume, your current knowledge level, and the amount of practice you need. Build your timeline from these factors rather than from anchored past experience.
Randomize question difficulty. When doing practice questions, mix difficulty levels rather than starting with easy questions and progressing to hard ones. Starting easy creates a positive anchor that inflates your confidence. Starting hard creates a negative anchor that deflates it. Randomized difficulty gives you a more accurate picture of your abilities.
Seek disconfirming evidence. Anchoring makes you selectively attend to information that confirms your anchored position. If you feel ready because you have improved significantly from your starting point, actively look for evidence that you might not be ready - topics you have not covered, question types you have not practiced, content domains where your scores are still below the threshold.
Beyond Practice Tests
Anchoring affects more than just practice test interpretation. It influences how long you study each topic (anchoring to how long the first topic took), which resources you use (anchoring to the first resource you tried), and how you interpret feedback from instructors or study partners (anchoring to the first piece of feedback you received).
The broad antidote is the same: establish objective criteria before you begin, collect multiple data points rather than relying on a single reference, and regularly question whether your judgments are based on the best available evidence or on the first piece of information you encountered.
Make Better Study Decisions
The anchoring effect is invisible. It does not feel like a bias - it feels like common sense. That is what makes it so dangerous. The students who make the best study decisions are not the ones who are immune to anchoring. They are the ones who know it exists, who build systems that compensate for it, and who regularly question whether their judgments are anchored to the right reference points.
