The Science of Interleaved Practice for Problem Solving

You sit down to study math. You work through 20 problems on integration by parts, one after another. By problem 15, you are moving fast and getting them all right. It feels like mastery.

Then you take the exam and freeze. The first problem requires integration by parts, but you cannot tell that just by looking at it. It could be substitution. It could be partial fractions. You spent all your practice time learning how to execute a technique, but zero time learning when to use it.

This is the core problem that interleaved practice solves.

What Interleaved Practice Actually Is

Most students practice in blocks. They work on one type of problem until they feel confident, then move on to the next type. This is called blocked practice, and it is the default study method in virtually every textbook and course.

Interleaved practice is the opposite. Instead of grouping similar problems together, you deliberately mix different problem types within a single study session. Five integration by parts problems, then five substitution problems, then five partial fractions, then back to integration by parts - or even more randomly shuffled.

The key distinction is that with interleaved practice, you never know which strategy a problem requires until you analyze it. You have to figure out what kind of problem you are looking at before you can solve it.

The Research Is Remarkably Consistent

The evidence for interleaved practice is strong and has been replicated across multiple domains.

Rohrer and Taylor (2007) had students practice math problems using either blocked or interleaved schedules. During practice, the blocked group performed better - they got more problems right and solved them faster. But on a test one week later, the interleaved group scored 43% higher. The practice that felt worse produced learning that was dramatically better.

Taylor and Rohrer (2010) replicated this finding with geometry problems. Students who practiced identifying and calculating the volume of different shapes in an interleaved order outperformed blocked-practice students on a delayed test by a wide margin.

Kornell and Bjork (2008) extended the finding beyond math. Art students who studied paintings by different artists in an interleaved order were better at identifying new, previously unseen paintings by those artists. Interleaving improved their ability to recognize each artist's style even though it made the initial learning feel harder.

Birnbaum et al. (2013) found the same effect with butterfly classification - interleaved study led to better categorization of new specimens.

Why It Works: Three Mechanisms

Discrimination Learning

The most important benefit of interleaving is that it forces you to discriminate between problem types. In blocked practice, you already know what strategy to use before you read the problem. Twenty problems in a row on the same concept means you just repeat the same procedure.

On an exam, you do not have that luxury. Every question could test any concept from the entire course. The first step is always identification: What kind of problem is this? Which approach applies here?

Interleaving trains that identification skill during practice. You have to look at each problem, analyze its features, and select the correct strategy. This is the exact cognitive work the exam will demand.

Retrieval Strengthening

When you switch between problem types, you have to retrieve the relevant strategy from long-term memory each time. In blocked practice, you retrieve the strategy once and hold it in working memory for the entire block.

Interleaving creates more retrieval events per study session. Each time you retrieve a strategy, the memory trace for that strategy gets stronger. This is consistent with Bjork's (1994) framework of desirable difficulties - conditions that make learning harder in the short term but produce better retention in the long term.

Deeper Encoding

Blocked practice encourages shallow processing. By the fifth problem of the same type, you are running on autopilot - executing a memorized procedure without much thought about why it works or when it applies.

Interleaving disrupts autopilot. Because each problem might require a completely different approach, you have to think more carefully about each one. This deeper processing leads to stronger, more flexible memories.

How to Actually Do It

Mix Problem Types Within Study Sessions

The simplest way to interleave is to stop working problems in the order your textbook presents them. Instead of doing all the problems at the end of Chapter 7 and then all the problems at the end of Chapter 8, mix them together.

Write problem numbers from multiple chapters on index cards, shuffle them, and work through them in random order. Or use the problem sets from different sections of your textbook and alternate between them.

Maintain Some Structure

Pure random interleaving is not always optimal. Research suggests that interleaving works best when the problem types being mixed are related enough that discrimination between them is meaningful. Mixing calculus problems with essay-writing prompts is not interleaving - it is just task switching.

The goal is to mix problems where the challenge is figuring out which approach to use. This means mixing problem types within the same subject or closely related subjects.

Start with Blocked Practice for Brand-New Material

Interleaving works best when you already have a basic understanding of each problem type. If you have never seen integration by parts before, doing it in an interleaved set with other techniques you also have never seen will just produce confusion.

Learn the basics of each technique through blocked practice first. Once you can execute each technique when you know which one to use, switch to interleaved practice to learn when to use each one.

Make It the Default for Review Sessions

The highest-value time to use interleaving is during review sessions, especially when preparing for exams. By review time, you should have at least basic familiarity with all the problem types. Interleaving during review trains the discrimination and retrieval skills that the exam will test.

Track Your Errors Differently

During interleaved practice, pay special attention to misidentification errors - times when you attempted the wrong strategy before realizing your mistake. These errors are gold. They tell you exactly which problem types you are confusing with each other, and you can focus additional practice on distinguishing between those specific types.

Why Students Resist It

Interleaving feels bad. There is no way around this. Blocked practice produces a sense of fluency and progress. Interleaved practice produces frustration, more errors, and a feeling of not learning anything.

Kornell and Bjork (2008) found that even after seeing their own test results - results that clearly showed interleaving was superior - the majority of participants still said they thought blocked practice was more effective. The subjective experience of learning is that misleading.

This is why understanding the research matters. If you know in advance that interleaving will feel worse but produce better results, you can push through the discomfort. Your feelings during practice are not reliable indicators of how much you are learning.

When Interleaving Is Most Valuable

Interleaving provides the biggest advantage in situations where the exam requires you to identify which approach to use - which is most exams. It is particularly valuable in:

  • Math and science courses where multiple formulas or techniques could apply
  • Courses with cumulative exams covering many units
  • Any subject where different problem types look similar on the surface

It is less critical for pure recall tasks where you simply need to produce a memorized fact. But for any assessment that requires you to apply knowledge - which is the majority of assessments worth preparing for - interleaving is one of the most effective practice strategies available.

The Bottom Line

Blocked practice teaches you how to execute strategies. Interleaved practice teaches you when to execute them. Since exams test both, you need both. But most students do far too much blocked practice and far too little interleaved practice.

Switch to interleaving during your review sessions. Accept that it will feel harder. Trust the research.
