There is a study strategy that almost everyone resists when they first try it. It feels confusing. It feels inefficient. It feels like it is not working. And then, when test day arrives, it outperforms the approach that felt smooth and productive.

That strategy is interleaving - mixing different topics, problem types, or skills within a single study session instead of practicing one type at a time.

The gap between how interleaving feels and how it performs is one of the most well-documented phenomena in learning science. Understanding why this gap exists can change how you study and, more importantly, help you trust the process even when it feels uncomfortable.

What Interleaving Looks Like

In a typical study session, most people use blocked practice. They study one topic until they feel comfortable with it, then move to the next. If you are learning three types of math problems, you would do twenty of type A, then twenty of type B, then twenty of type C.

Interleaving rearranges this. Instead of AAA-BBB-CCC, you would study in a mixed pattern: A-B-C-A-C-B-A-B-C. The same material is covered, in the same total quantity, but the order is scrambled.

This applies beyond math. You can interleave different historical periods, different scientific concepts, different grammatical structures in a language, or different question formats in exam preparation.

The Research Is Clear

The evidence for interleaving is substantial and consistent.

In a foundational study, Rohrer and Taylor (2007) taught students to calculate the volumes of four different geometric solids. One group used blocked practice (all problems of one type before moving on), and the other used interleaved practice (problems of different types mixed together). On a test one week later, the blocked group scored 20% correct. The interleaved group scored 63%.

That is not a marginal difference. It is a threefold improvement.

Similar results have been found across domains. Kornell and Bjork (2008) showed that interleaving helped people learn to identify the painting styles of different artists. Birnbaum and colleagues (2013) found interleaving benefits for learning to classify butterfly species. Taylor and Rohrer (2010) confirmed the effect with grade school math. The pattern holds whether the learners are children or adults, novices or intermediates.

Why It Feels Wrong

If interleaving is so effective, why does almost nobody do it naturally? Because it creates a specific type of discomfort that people interpret as failure.

The Fluency Illusion

Blocked practice creates a feeling of fluency. After doing ten problems of the same type in a row, you get fast. You recognize the pattern. You stop thinking hard. This feels like learning.

But it is not. It is pattern matching within a narrow context. You are not learning to identify which approach to use - you already know, because you have been doing the same type for the last ten problems. The real challenge on an exam is not just executing a procedure but recognizing which procedure the situation calls for.

Desirable Difficulty

Robert Bjork, a cognitive psychologist at UCLA, coined the term "desirable difficulties" to describe learning conditions that feel harder in the moment but produce better long-term retention. Interleaving is a textbook example.

When you switch from one topic to another, you have to reload the relevant knowledge from memory. This requires effort. That effort strengthens the memory traces and builds the discrimination skills that blocked practice never develops.

The difficulty is not a bug. It is the mechanism by which learning happens.

Discrimination Learning

One of the most important skills on any exam is knowing which concept, method, or framework applies to a given problem. Blocked practice never tests this skill because the context tells you the answer - you know what type of problem you are working on because you have been doing that type for the last twenty minutes.

Interleaving forces you to discriminate between problem types with every single question. "Is this a type A problem or a type B problem?" That act of categorization strengthens your understanding of what makes each type distinct.

The Performance Paradox

Here is the part that trips people up: during practice, blocked studying produces better apparent performance. You get more answers right. You move faster. You feel more confident.

Interleaving produces more errors during practice. You move slower. You feel less confident.

But on a delayed test - the kind that actually measures learning - the interleaved group outperforms the blocked group consistently. Kornell and Bjork (2008) found that even after experiencing the superior test results of interleaving, most participants still believed that blocking was the better strategy. The subjective experience was so powerful that it overrode the objective evidence.

This is the fundamental trap: we judge our learning by how it feels during practice, but feelings during practice are poor predictors of long-term retention. Smooth practice leads to fragile learning. Effortful practice leads to durable learning.

How to Implement Interleaving

Start With Related Topics

Interleaving works best when the topics being mixed are related enough that discrimination matters. Mixing calculus with French vocabulary is not interleaving - it is just distraction. Mixing different types of calculus problems, or different French verb tenses, is genuine interleaving.

Use a Structured Rotation

Do not just randomly jump between topics. Create a rotation that ensures each topic gets adequate coverage. For example, if you are studying three topics, cycle through them in rounds: spend fifteen to twenty minutes on topic A, then the same on B, then C, then back to A.

Expect the Discomfort

Knowing that interleaving feels wrong is half the battle. When you feel confused, slow, or frustrated during interleaved practice, recognize it as the desirable difficulty doing its work. The discomfort is not evidence that the strategy is failing. It is evidence that your brain is working harder - and learning more.

Combine With Other Effective Strategies

Interleaving pairs well with spaced repetition and active recall. Space your interleaved sessions over days and weeks, and use retrieval practice (testing yourself rather than rereading) within each session. This combination creates multiple layers of desirable difficulty that reinforce each other.

Trust the Evidence, Not the Feeling

The hardest part of interleaving is not the technique itself. It is continuing to use it when every instinct tells you to go back to blocked practice. Your brain is wired to prefer fluency over effort, and blocked practice delivers that fluency in spades.

But fluency during practice is not the goal. Performance on the test is the goal. And the evidence is overwhelmingly clear: interleaving produces better test performance, better long-term retention, and better discrimination between concepts.

The discomfort you feel during interleaving is not a warning sign. It is the feeling of learning.
