There is a better way. The keyword method is a mnemonic technique that transforms abstract, arbitrary associations into vivid, memorable mental images. What Is the Keyword Method?

Dual Coding
Paivio's (1986) dual coding theory proposes that information encoded through both verbal and visual channels creates two independent memory traces instead of one. How to Create Effective Keywords and Images
The quality of your keyword and image directly determines how well the method works. Here are principles for creating effective ones.
The Keyword Should Sound Similar
The keyword does not need to be a perfect phonetic match - just close enough to trigger the association when you hear or read the target word. A partial overlap is fine. "Ant fracture city" is not a precise phonetic match for "anfractuosity," but the sound similarity is strong enough to serve as a bridge.
The Image Should Be Interactive
Static images are less memorable than dynamic, interactive ones. Instead of imagining a duck and a pot sitting next to each other, imagine a duck actively sitting inside a pot, splashing water everywhere. The interaction between elements binds them together in memory.
Use Exaggeration and Absurdity
Normal, everyday images blend into the background of your memory. Bizarre, exaggerated, or impossible images stand out. A bell the size of a house hanging from a tiny oak sapling is more memorable than a normal bell on a normal tree. Leverage absurdity.

Limitations of the Keyword Method

It Requires Effort to Set Up
Creating keywords and images takes more initial effort than simple repetition. For very large volumes of material, this setup cost can be significant. However, the improved retention means you spend less total time on review, so the net time investment often favors the keyword method.
Not All Terms Have Easy Keywords
Some terms are difficult to break into keyword components. Highly abstract or phonologically unusual words may resist easy keyword creation. In these cases, you may need to be creative with partial sound matches or combine the keyword method with other strategies.
It Primarily Builds Recognition and Recall of Meaning
The keyword method excels at establishing the initial link between a term and its meaning. It is less effective at building deep conceptual understanding, procedural knowledge, or the ability to apply concepts in complex situations. Use it as a foundation for further learning, not as a complete study strategy.
Images May Interfere Over Time
If you create many similar images for different terms, they can begin to interfere with each other. Keep your images as distinctive as possible, and be prepared to revise images that are generating confusion.
Combining the Keyword Method With Other Strategies
The keyword method is most effective when used as part of a broader study system. Use it to establish initial term-meaning associations, then strengthen and deepen that knowledge through spaced retrieval practice, contextual exposure, and elaborative study.
A practical workflow: Learn 10 new terms using the keyword method. Review them the next day using retrieval practice (try to recall the meaning without looking). Review again three days later.
