Abstract concepts are the backbone of deep learning. Principles, theories, frameworks, formulas - these are what allow you to handle novel situations rather than just repeating memorized answers. But abstract concepts are also notoriously difficult to learn.

The reason is not that people lack the ability to think abstractly. It is that abstraction, by definition, removes the specific details that make ideas meaningful and memorable. A principle stated in general terms can be technically precise but cognitively empty - you read the words, nod along, and retain nothing.

Concrete examples solve this problem. They anchor abstract ideas to specific, tangible situations that your brain can process, remember, and build upon. Using concrete examples is not a shortcut or a simplification. It is how understanding works.

Why Abstract Concepts Are Hard to Learn

When you encounter an abstract concept for the first time, your brain has to do something unnatural: it has to create a mental representation of something that has no physical form, no sensory qualities, and no specific instance to latch onto.

Consider the concept of "opportunity cost" in economics. The definition - the value of the next best alternative forgone when making a decision - is clear and accurate. But reading it does not produce understanding. It produces familiarity with a string of words.

Now consider a concrete example: you have a free evening and you can either study for tomorrow's exam or go to a concert with friends. If you choose to study, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment you would have had at the concert. If you choose the concert, the opportunity cost is the better exam score you would have earned by studying.

Suddenly the concept has weight. It connects to an experience you can imagine. It means something.

Research by Rawson, Thomas, and Jacoby (2015) found that concrete examples improved both immediate understanding and long-term retention of abstract concepts. The effect was particularly strong for concepts that were novel to the learner - exactly the situation most students face when studying new material.

The Dual Coding Advantage

One reason concrete examples are so effective relates to dual coding theory, proposed by Allan Paivio. This theory suggests that information encoded in both verbal and visual (or experiential) forms is remembered better than information encoded in only one form.

Abstract concepts are inherently verbal - they exist as language and logic. Concrete examples add a second encoding by creating a mental image or scenario that the brain can represent visually or experientially. This dual representation creates more retrieval pathways, making the information more accessible when you need it.

When you think about opportunity cost and recall the concert-versus-studying example, you are retrieving the concept through a specific mental image. This image serves as a hook that pulls the abstract principle along with it.

How to Use Concrete Examples Effectively

Generate Your Own Examples

Reading someone else's examples is helpful. Generating your own is significantly more effective.

A study by Berry (1983) showed that learners who generated their own examples of concepts demonstrated better understanding and transfer than learners who only studied provided examples. The act of creating an example requires you to understand the concept well enough to instantiate it - to find a specific case that fits the general principle.

For every abstract concept you study, challenge yourself to come up with at least two concrete examples from your own experience or knowledge. If you cannot, that is a signal that your understanding is still superficial.

Use Multiple Examples

One example is a start, but it can create a narrow understanding. If your only example of opportunity cost involves a concert, you might unconsciously associate the concept with entertainment decisions rather than understanding it as a universal principle of choice.

Multiple examples - drawn from different contexts - help you extract the underlying principle from the specific details. Research by Gick and Holyoak (1983) demonstrated that learners who studied two analogous examples were significantly more likely to transfer the underlying principle to a new problem than learners who studied only one.

For each concept, aim for examples from at least two or three different domains. If opportunity cost can be illustrated with entertainment, career decisions, and time management, the abstract principle becomes clear through the pattern across examples.

Move From Concrete to Abstract

The most effective learning sequence is not abstract to concrete or concrete to abstract exclusively - it is a deliberate movement between both.

Start with concrete examples to build intuition. Then state the abstract principle. Then test your understanding with new examples. Then return to the abstraction with deeper comprehension.

This oscillation between concrete and abstract creates the strongest form of understanding because it builds both the intuitive grasp and the formal knowledge. You understand what the concept means (from examples) and what it says (from the abstraction).

Choose Examples That Highlight Key Features

Not all examples are equally useful. The best examples clearly illustrate the defining features of the concept while avoiding irrelevant details that might confuse.

For example, if you are learning about the concept of "sunk cost" - money already spent that cannot be recovered - a clear example would be continuing to watch a bad movie because you paid for the ticket. The scenario is simple, the sunk cost is obvious, and the irrational behavior is clear.

A less useful example might involve a complex business decision with multiple factors, where the sunk cost is entangled with legitimate considerations. The concept is still present, but it is harder to see.

Start with clean, clear examples. Add complexity later, once the core concept is understood.

Common Mistakes With Concrete Examples

Confusing the Example With the Concept

A danger of concrete examples is that learners sometimes remember the example but forget the principle. They can tell you about the concert and the exam but cannot articulate what opportunity cost means in general terms.

To prevent this, always explicitly connect the example back to the abstract concept. "This is an example of opportunity cost because..." That explicit connection prevents the example from becoming an isolated story.

Using Only Familiar Examples

Examples from your own experience are powerful, but they can limit your understanding to familiar contexts. Deliberately seek examples from unfamiliar domains to stretch your grasp of the concept. If you understand opportunity cost in personal decisions, try applying it to government policy or business strategy. Each new domain tests and strengthens your understanding.

Stopping at Surface Similarity

Sometimes learners choose examples that look similar to the concept on the surface but do not actually illustrate the underlying principle. Check each example rigorously: does it genuinely demonstrate the concept, or does it just share surface features?

Concrete Examples as a Study Strategy

Incorporating concrete examples into your study routine is straightforward:

  • When reading a textbook or watching a lecture, note every abstract concept and immediately try to generate a concrete example
  • In your study notes, pair every definition or principle with at least two specific examples
  • When reviewing material, test yourself by stating the concept and producing an example from memory - then do the reverse, starting from an example and identifying the concept
  • In study groups, challenge each other to come up with novel examples for key concepts

This practice transforms passive reading into active learning. It forces you to process concepts at a deeper level than recognition or memorization. And it builds the kind of flexible, transferable understanding that exams - and real-world application - demand.
