There is a moment during every study session when you have learned the material well enough. You can recall the key concepts, solve the problems, and explain the ideas. But instead of stopping, you keep going. You review the flashcards one more time. You reread the chapter again. You run through the practice problems you already solved correctly.
This is overlearning - continuing to study material after you have already demonstrated mastery of it. And while it feels productive, research consistently shows that the additional time spent produces surprisingly little benefit.
What the Research Says
The concept of overlearning has been studied extensively since the early days of experimental psychology. A landmark study by Rohrer and Taylor (2006) examined how additional practice beyond mastery affected long-term retention. They found that while some overlearning improved memory slightly in the short term, the benefits largely disappeared after one week. The extra study time produced almost no advantage on delayed tests.
A 2012 meta-analysis by Driskell, Willis, and Copper confirmed this pattern across multiple studies. Additional practice beyond the point of initial mastery showed rapidly diminishing returns. The first few repetitions after mastery provided a small boost. Continued repetition beyond that added almost nothing to long-term retention.
This does not mean that review is useless - far from it. The critical distinction is between reviewing material at spaced intervals (which is highly effective) and continuing to drill material in the same session after you already know it (which is not).
Why Overlearning Feels Effective
One reason students overlearn is that it feels like it is working. When you review material you already know, retrieval is fast and easy. You feel confident and fluent. This fluency creates what psychologists call a metacognitive illusion - you confuse the ease of current performance with the durability of future recall.
Kornell and Bjork's research on judgments of learning demonstrates this clearly. Students who practiced material to the point of overlearning rated their confidence higher, but their actual test performance was no better than students who stopped at the point of initial mastery and used the remaining time to study weaker material.
The psychological comfort of overlearning is real, but it is misleading. Feeling like you know something extremely well right now does not mean you will remember it better on exam day.
The Opportunity Cost Problem
The biggest problem with overlearning is not that it is harmful - it is that it wastes time you could spend on something more productive. Every minute you spend reviewing material you already know is a minute you are not spending on material you have not yet mastered.
Consider a student studying for an exam covering five chapters. She has mastered the content from chapters one and two but is still struggling with chapters three through five. If she spends an additional hour reviewing chapters one and two, the marginal improvement in her knowledge is tiny. If she spends that same hour working on the chapters she has not yet mastered, the improvement is substantial.
This is the core argument against overlearning. It is not that the activity itself is harmful. It is that the opportunity cost is enormous. Time is a finite resource during exam preparation, and spending it on already-mastered material means less time for everything else.
When Overlearning Is Actually Useful
There are specific situations where overlearning is justified.
High-stakes motor skills. For physical procedures that must be performed flawlessly under pressure - surgical techniques, emergency protocols, flight procedures - overlearning to the point of automaticity is essential. When stress is high and the consequences of error are severe, you want performance to be automatic rather than deliberate.
Foundational knowledge you need to build on. If a concept is foundational to everything else in the course, overlearning it can pay off because it reduces cognitive load when you encounter more complex material later. Knowing your multiplication tables automatically frees up mental resources for algebra.
Performance under extreme time pressure. If an exam gives you very little time per question, having material memorized to the point of instant recall can improve your score by giving you more time for harder questions.
For most academic studying, however, these conditions do not apply. Most exam preparation involves a large volume of material with limited study time, which means efficiency matters more than perfection on any single topic.
How to Know When to Stop
The practical question is: how do you know when you have studied something enough? Here are concrete guidelines.
Use the successful retrieval test. Try to recall the material from memory without looking at your notes. If you can accurately recall the key concepts, explain them in your own words, and apply them to a problem, you have reached mastery. Stop and move on.
Apply the two-correct-in-a-row rule. For flashcards or practice problems, if you get an item correct twice in a row across different study sessions (not within the same session), you can safely deprioritize it. Continue to review it at increasing intervals, but stop drilling it every session.
Monitor your error rate. If your accuracy on a set of material is consistently above 90%, your time is better spent on material where your accuracy is lower. Focus your energy where the gap between your current knowledge and mastery is largest.
Trust the spacing effect. Instead of overlearning in a single session, schedule a brief review for a few days later. If you can still recall the material after the delay, you have solid retention. If you cannot, the spaced review will strengthen the memory more effectively than additional same-session practice would have.
A Better Use of Your Time
When you catch yourself reviewing material you already know well, redirect that energy. Here is a framework for using reclaimed study time effectively.
First, identify your weakest areas. What topics do you avoid studying because they are confusing or frustrating? Those are exactly the topics that need your attention most.
Second, practice applying your knowledge in new contexts. Instead of re-reviewing the same material, try using it to solve novel problems, explain it to someone else, or connect it to other topics. This kind of elaborative practice builds deeper understanding without wasting time on rote repetition.
Third, generate your own questions. Creating questions about material you know well forces you to think about it from new angles, which strengthens your understanding without simply repeating what you already mastered.
The most efficient learners are not the ones who study the longest. They are the ones who recognize when they have learned something well enough and redirect their effort to where it will have the greatest impact. Knowing when to stop studying a topic is just as important as knowing how to study it.
